Kata Beach
No High-Rises Here

I am sure the presence of Club Med on Phuket's Kata Beach has been one of the reasons the beach here has not been overdeveloped. This low-rise hotel spreads along most of the beach front restricting other hotel developments to the extreme north and extreme south of the beach or, as a last resort, inland.

Tucked away at the southern end of the beach is Mom Tri's Boathouse. and, further south still, on the headland between Kata Beach and Kata Noi (literally 'little Kata') is Mom Tris Villa Royale. I am sure there are other people who like me like the idea of staying in a local village atmosphere. Well, in my opinion, this is about as close as you can get on Phuket. The area around The Boathouse in particular is village-like. It is not a village in the traditional sense because it exists (now at least) because the hotels are there; but for me that doesn't take away from the atmosphere.

The beach is long and sandy; and , during the season, the sea-bathing is good and you can snorkel here.

For some year-round entertainment (well almost) at the northern end of the beach, just before you get to Karon Beach , is Dino Park. This is a prehistoric-themed 18-hole mini-golf course. I haven't had the opportunity to visit but I understand it is good fun for families and there is a restaurant where the kids can dig into the type of food they probably shouldn't be digging into :-).

If you want a place where you have a mix of bars, shops and restaurants on your doorstep but without it being over the top, then Phuket's Kata Beach could be for you.
