You Can Travel To
Phuket Thailand
By Land, Sea And Air

Naturally to arrive in Phuket Thailand by air is the most convenient but the other ways can be fun.

Travelling To Phuket Thailand By air

This is of course how most visitors choose to arrive and Phuket Airport is serviced by some 19 airlines including scheduled, chartered and no-frills. Most passengers still route via the Thai capital Bangkok (BKK) but you can also travel direct from:

  • Chiang Mai, Thailand (CNX)
  • Frankfurt, Germany (FRA)
  • Hong Kong (HKG)
  • Ko Samui, Thailand (USM)
  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (KUL)
  • Osaka, Japan (OSA)
  • Siem Reap, Cambodia (REP)
  • Singapore (SIN)
  • Sydney, Australia (SYD)
  • Taipei, Taiwan (TPE)
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Utapoa –Pattaya- Thailand (UTP)

(The international airport codes are in brackets).

This list is not definitive as airline schedules do change so you will need to check with your carrier; but it gives you an idea just how accessible Phuket is.

When checking your routing to Thailand, it is worth knowing the difference between the following:

Direct flight – one flight number from point A to point B but with the possibility of stops.

Non-stop – means exactly that. A non-stop direct flight from point A to point B.

Indirect or Connecting – you will have to change aircraft in one or more places.

Travelling To Phuket Thailand By Road

Phuket Island is connected to the mainland by Sarasin Bridge and Thep Krasattri Bridge so you can drive here, and I have on a number of occasions. The first time I was a passenger on a tour with a travel writer friend of mine. We travelled all the way from Bangkok (around 539 miles, 867km). Had we been crazy enough to do it all in one go it would have taken about 10 hours. As it was we broke the journey into 2 parts with a stop at Ranong, further up the Andaman Coast.

I found the journey along the Gulf of Thailand quite boring (apart from the company of course, David!) because it is very flat but once we crossed the Isthmus of Kra (that thin bit of land which joins Thailand and Malaysia) everything changed. The green forest-clad mountains are fantastic and once you hit the western seaboard you have the beautiful Andaman Sea for company most of the way to Phuket.

I once drove in the opposite direction across the bridge from Phuket to Krabi with my wife Sandra and son Alex. Now this journey should take around 3 hours but on that particular day it was more like 6. I blame my navigator! She blames my refusal to ever turnaround. Now I leave you to decide who was right but we did see some breathtaking scenery along the way (twice on some occasions!).

With an airport at Krabi one-way journeys between these two destinations is well worth considering. Incidentally you could also consider combining Phuket with Surathani where you can catch a boat to Ko Samui.

Yes, I highly recommend car rental in this area (but not in and around Bangkok) although you must watch out for motorcyclists most of whom seem to have a death wish; long distance lorry drivers; and bus drivers. Oh, and I suggest you do not drive at night.

Travelling To Phuket Thailand By Rail

Theoretically you can travel by rail but in reality you have to leave the train on the east coat and travel across by bus. Not my idea of luxury!

Travelling To Phuket Thailand By Sea

If you have your own yacht, Phuket is a great place to visit. There is some heavy investment into marina development at the moment with a growing number of berths.

I arrived by ferry once (not quite as glamorous as a yacht) from Phi Phi Island. The journey actually started in Krabi Town. I travelled by ferry from there to Phi Phi and then onward. That was in the good old days when I was doing inspection visits at a hundred miles an hour!

I shall miss those inspection visits to Phuket Thailand but the vacations are much more enjoyable.
